Villarreal have a decent buffer inside La Liga’s top-four, but they can ill afford to give three points to one of their nearest challengers when they host Espanyol. After a 2-0 victory in the reverse fixture, Villarreal have won each of the last six La Liga H2Hs, and need just one more to record their best-ever run of consecutive top-flight victories against any one opponent. Villarreal are looking to win a fourth successive Monday-held La Liga home game for the first time ever.

Villarreal start this round seven points clear of the chasing pack inside the top four and with a game in hand, giving them some breathing space through what has been their longest winless run of this league season (D1, L2). The Yellow Submarine have lost seven of their last ten games in all competitions (W2, D1), a slump that’s seen them crash out of Europe and the Copa del Rey, making a top-four finish their only goal this term. Boss Marcelino may therefore be alarmed that his side’s three failures to win at home in La Liga this term came against sides who join them in the top six pre-round (D1, L2).

Espanyol are enduring an even poorer run of form and are under threat of dropping out of the European race entirely. They’re on their longest winless run of this La Liga season (D1, L4), conceding 2+ goals in all four defeats to leave them at risk of dropping out of the top six ahead of kick-off here. Espanyol’s last league win came before Christmas against Athletic Club, a repeat of which would see them win consecutive Monday night away games for the first time in top-flight history. Manolo González’s men are also looking to rediscover their form on the road, where they’d won three successive league trips before failing to beat strugglers Levante (D 1-1) and Valencia (L 3-2).

Villarreal opened the scoring in 15 of their 21 La Liga games this season (W12, D3). Nine of Espanyol’s 12 away league goals (75%) this term arrived after half-time. Only two of Espanyol’s last ten La Liga games were decided by a 2+ goal margin.

Gerard Moreno has found the net in six of his last ten La Liga games following last week’s brace against Osasuna, his only goalscoring appearance this season that Villarreal did not win (W5, D1). Roberto Fernández is Espanyol’s leading goal contributor (G5, A2) this league season after he opened the scoring in last week’s loss to Alavés.

Villarreal’s Alfonso Pedraza is suspended, while Espanyol look to have no major absences.
