A new chapter is to be written in one of the most heated rivalries in Italian football as Lazio host neighbours Roma in the latest edition of the Derby della Capitale. Neither side is where they want to be at this stage of the campaign, especially the hosts who finished last season as Serie A (SA) runners-up, but start this round way down in tenth after last week’s 1-0 defeat at Bologna halted a three-game winning run.

Maurizio Sarri will hope the setback at Bologna was just a blip in their improving form, and a midweek UEFA Champions League win over Feyenoord would support that notion. Interestingly, that was the third straight Lazio contest that ended with a 1-0 victory for the home side on the day (W2, L1). Those results gain further significance when you consider that each of the last two H2Hs between these two also ended 1-0 – both in Lazio’s favour.

Roma are one point better off than their rivals but have endured similar struggles. They’ve had less rest time than Lazio having travelled to Slavia Prague on Thursday night, a game that ended in a 2-0 defeat and had manager José Mourinho furious post-match where he claimed he wouldn’t “forget” the manner of the loss, even if Roma go onto win this derby clash.

The defeat meant it’s two losses in three competitive matches for Roma, who had just started to build momentum after winning their five games prior. They will hope to get back on track here, but they’ve only won once on their league travels this term, while their recent seven-game record as the designated away side against Lazio is poor (D2, L5).

Players to watch: Felipe Anderson’s strike settled the first H2H contest between these two last season; he’s registered the most SA goal contributions in Lazio’s squad so far (G1, A4) and bagged an assist in midweek. After failing to score in a Europa League game for the first time in his career, Roma’s top SA scorer (G6) Romelu Lukaku will be glad to get back into league action.
