The Allianz Stadium is set to host the 185th Serie A (SA) Derby d’Italia as the division’s current top two sides clash in a mouthwatering contest. Juventus come into the meeting on the back of a five-game winning streak but still trail league leaders Inter Milan by two points, however a sixth successive competitive win for the first time since 2021 for the club would see them leapfrog their visitors into the top spot.
Massimiliano Allegri has played down his side’s title aspirations in recent weeks, reiterating Juventus’ goal is to secure a top-four finish. While they might internally hope for more, it’s likely that a robust defence will be key to anything positive they achieve as the Old Lady have conceded just seven SA goals all season, and just one across their last seven league outings. Yet, just 19 SA goals scored highlights how that defensive solidity is coming at the expense of their attack.
The home side’s six-game streak of SA clean sheets was ended in their latest 2-1 win over Cagliari, and their defence is sure to be tested again against the league’s highest scorers coming into the round, Inter (29). Simone Inzaghi’s men have been sturdy at the back themselves and in fact, are the only SA outfit to have conceded fewer goals (six) than their hosts (seven) so far. Their latest shutout came before the break when they cemented top spot with a 2-0 win over Frosinone.
The visitors travel boasting wins with clean sheets in each of their last five SA trips but will have a small psychological disadvantage to overcome in this one as they lost both SA H2Hs last season without scoring a single goal. Inter did at least get some minor revenge by later dumping Juventus out of the Coppa Italia at the semi-finals stage, a feat they’ll hope to replicate to open up a healthy lead atop of SA.
Players to watch: Filip Kostić has collected three SA assists this term, whilst he contributed to all three of Juventus’ goals against Inter last season (G1, A2). Red-hot Lautaro Martínez has already scored 12 SA goals this season and will be looking to add to his five career goal contributions against Juventus (G3, A2).
Hot stat: Inter are the only SA side yet to concede a goal beyond the 76th minute, whilst netting eight times in that period themselves.
