Inter Milan won 1-0 at Empoli on Sunday, making it only the fourth time in their history that they have won the first five matches of a Serie A (SA) campaign. Head coach Simone Inzaghi brushed that fact aside, saying that “records are nice”, but was happier with the fact that “we were patient” in a game where they failed to score at least two goals for the first time this term in SA.
Playing mid-table Sassuolo in midweek could be tricky as the visitors have managed to keep the SA H2H competitive (INT: W10, D2, L8) over the years. Five of those wins have come in the last six league H2Hs (L1) though, indicating that the Nerazzurri may have finally cracked the code as they look to start a top-flight season with four straight home wins for the first time since 2017/18.
That campaign did, however, see Sassuolo do a league double over Inter, including a 2-1 win at San Siro, so they won’t mind the nostalgic references. Alessio Dionisi’s men are coming off a famous 4-2 victory over Juventus at the weekend that may have hogged the limelight due to the comical own goal scored by Federico Gatti, but Dionisi felt it was their courage that got them a second win in three games (L1).
Quick starts could be the norm once again as Sassuolo’s last four games have seen the match opener arrive in the first 20 minutes. It was the Neroverdi who took a 2-0 lead after 24 minutes in their last away game before eventually losing 4-2 to Frosinone, putting them at risk of starting a SA season with three straight away defeats for the first time since 2019/20.
Players to watch: Inter’s Lautaro Martínez will certainly be feeling at home, having seen six of his last seven SA goals come at San Siro and having scored five across his last eight H2Hs. The visitors could be banking once again on talisman Domenico Berardi, who has scored three goals in as many games and contributed in each of his last three H2Hs (G1, A2).
Hot stat: After five matchdays, Sassuolo’s matches have seen a league-high 12.20 corners per game.
