Inter Milan remain on course for a second FIFA Club World Cup (CWC) title after moving into the round of 16. The Italian outfit now face 2023 runners-up Fluminense, who squeezed into the knockout phase following a 0-0 draw against Mamelodi Sundowns. This is not only a debut meeting between these two clubs, but also sees Fluminense face Italian opposition for the first time. Inter have faced Brazilian opposition once before, losing 1-0 to Santos in the Intercontinental Supercup in June 1969.

When Cristian Chivu took the reins at Inter earlier this month, his first task was to help the team shrug off the disappointment of a UEFA Champions League final hammering and second-placed finish in Serie A. His squad have responded in impressive fashion, with their latest win (2-0 v River Plate) not only ensuring that he is yet to lose at the helm (W2, D1), but also securing top spot in Club World Cup Group E, having conceded just twice in the process.

That defence may be a problem for their opponents, whose passage to the knockout phase included two 0-0 draws (W1), failing to even land a shot on target in the latter of those matches against Sundowns. That was still enough to advance from the group though, and means that the Brazilian outfit have gone nine games without defeat in all competitions (W6, D3) – their joint-longest such run since January 2023.

Inter have not lost a game in which they have scored since January (W21, D9). Inter have netted at least twice in six of their last eight matches. Fluminense have not conceded a second-half goal in their last seven games. Just five of Fluminense’s last 18 matches have featured 3+ goals.

Inter’s Nicolò Barella has failed to hit the target with his seven shots at the Club World Cup, but has not tasted defeat across the last 12 games he has scored in at club level (W10, D2). Should he improve his radar, he still needs to beat veteran Fluminense goalkeeper Fábio who, at 44 years old, has defied his age to save seven of the nine efforts that have come his way in this competition.

Inter could be missing up to six players here, with Marcus Thuram and Davide Frattesi the latest in a long line of players to potentially miss this game. Fluminense have a handful of injury problems, with new signing Yeferson Soteldo yet to make his debut.
