Elche could scarcely have hand-picked a worse opponent to end their winless run against than defending champions Barcelona. Elche have lost 20 of the last 24 H2Hs (D4), including each of the last 11. Barcelona have kept a clean sheet in 15 of the last 18 meetings between the sides. Barcelona’s away league games have produced a league-high nine goals in the opening 15 minutes.
Despite making a solid start to the season which saw them billed as early European challengers, Elche have drastically fallen off the pace. A return of just two wins in 14 La Liga games (D5, L7) has plummeted the newly-promoted side down the table, though some heart can be taken from ten of the 11 points they earned within that run coming at home. Elche have lost only one of their last 15 La Liga home games (W7, D7), but a limp record against the pre-round top six this term (D3, L3) suggests extending that run with a draw could be the best they can hope for as their three-point cushion to the drop zone starts to look increasingly precarious.
Barcelona did things the hard way on Wednesday, but their 4-1 comeback win against Copenhagen was enough to secure a top-eight finish in the UEFA Champions League. With their safe passage to the last 16 assured, avoiding two extra games in February in the process, Barcelona can now fully focus on their La Liga campaign, which sees them come into this round with a narrow one-point lead at the summit as they look to retain their crown. Recent form certainly suggests they’re good value to retain top spot for another week as Barça have won 14 of their last 15 competitive games (L1), while they’re also unbeaten in 18 La Liga away games against sides from the Valencian Community (W16, D2).
Barcelona’s La Liga away games have averaged a league-high 3.91 goals this season. Elche have conceded half of their ten home league goals this season after the 75th minute. Elche have only won half of the La Liga games they scored first in this term (W5, D4, L1).
Elche’s Grady Diangana could be the man to make a late impact having netted after the 70th minute on three of his last four scoring appearances at club level. Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal opened the scoring in the ninth minute in the reverse fixture, but his last five goals for the club have all arrived after half-time in games Barça won by 2+ goals.
Elche’s Aleix Febas is suspended here, while Pedri has missed Barcelona’s last two games.
