Both Crystal Palace and Fiorentina come into this UEFA Conference League quarter-final in improving form, with the Italian side having a strong historical pedigree in this competition. Crystal Palace have never faced Italian opposition before, while Fiorentina are winless in three matches against English opposition, the last of which came against West Ham in the 2022/23 Conference League final. Seven of Crystal Palace’s last nine home games featured under 2.5 goals.
Crystal Palace appear to have got over a mid-season slump and have now lost just two of their last 11 matches (W5, D4). The Eagles made hard work of overcoming AEK Larnaca in the last round, needing extra-time to dump the Cypriot side out at the last 16 stage, so the evident step up in quality is bound to be a concern here. They can hardly lean on solid form at Selhurst Park either, as Oliver Glasner’s men have only won two of their last 13 games there (D6, L5), but they’ll perhaps be encouraged by the fact both wins came across their last four such matches (D2), in all four of which they managed to keep a clean sheet.
Fiorentina have made this competition their own in recent years, reaching the semi-finals in each of the last three editions, but two failures to win in the final therein have left a bitter taste. Going all the way is undoubtedly the aim for this season, and La Viola look to be hitting form at just the right time as they’re now unbeaten in six matches (W4, D2) after beating Verona 1-0 on Saturday. With that run easing relegation fears in Serie A, Fiorentina can place some added focus on this competition, and particularly on this first leg, where they go in search of a sixth win in seven competitive away games (L1).
Crystal Palace have conceded all eight of their Conference League goals this term after half-time. Eight of Fiorentina’s last nine away matches produced over 2.5 goals. Fiorentina have committed the most fouls of any side remaining in the Conference League (144).
Jean-Philippe Mateta could be in line for a start here and has netted his last six goals at Selhurst Park, the last three of which opened the scoring. Roberto Piccoli is more of an away-day specialist, netting five of his last six Fiorentina goals on the road, including in their last two away games in this competition.
Crystal Palace will be without the suspended Jørgen Strand Larsen. Fiorentina’s Rolando Mandragora has missed their last two games and Dodô joined him on the sidelines at the weekend.
