With a paltry seven goals to their name, Club Brugge were the lowest scorers to qualify for the UEFA Champions League (UCL) play-offs. Despite a 3-1 defeat to Manchester City on matchday eight, Nicky Hayen’s side squeezed into the league phase top 24 on goal difference, and now have their sights set on reaching the last 16 in a third successive European campaign.

Standing in their way are an Atalanta side who are flying high in Serie A, and downing them won’t be easy considering Brugge are on a 15-match winless run against Italian opposition (D6, L9), a streak that stretches back to 2003! Recent history doesn’t offer much inspiration either, as the Blue and Blacks have picked up just one victory in six fixtures across all competitions (D3, L2), although that success did come in their last outing, beating Leuven 1-0.

Things were somewhat more comfortable at the weekend for La Dea, who netted 5+ goals for the sixth time this season as they thrashed Verona 5-0 on Saturday. Gian Piero Gasperini’s side ended their own run of three games without a win (D2, L1) with that success, a streak that started with a 2-2 draw against Barcelona which cost them a top-eight finish in the UCL.

Atalanta ultimately finished in ninth place in the league phase, one point outside the automatic qualification places. The 2023/24 UEFA Europa League winners are seeking a last 16 spot in this competition for the first time since 2020/21, and history suggests supporters should travel to Belgium full of confidence, as their side have lost only two of their last 13 UCL away trips (W8, D3), scoring at least twice in 11 of those outings.

Players to watch: Gustaf Nilsson has been in impressive form for Brugge this season, with nine of his ten strikes proving to be the first or last of the game. With four goals and five assists, only two players have registered more UCL goal involvements than Atalanta’s Charles De Ketelaere this season.

Hot stat: There have been over 2.5 goals in seven of Atalanta’s last eight UCL away fixtures.
