For the first time since 1984/85, Feyenoord are in the knockout stages of the European Cup/UEFA Champions League (UCL), making it to this play-off stage despite losing 6-1 on matchday eight of the league phase to Lille! They followed up that embarrassment with defeats to rivals PSV and Ajax across league and cup, before finally stopping the rot with a confidence-boosting 3-0 win over Sparta Rotterdam on Saturday. Even that was not enough to save manager Brian Priske, who was sacked on Monday with the club unhappy about “inconsistent results and a lack of progress”.

As the Dutch side prepare to host AC Milan for the first time since 1969/70, they do so with a solid record against Italian clubs, losing just one of their 11 meetings with them at home in major European competitions (W6, D4). They did well the last time they hosted a former winner of this competition too, thrashing Bayern Munich 3-0 on matchday seven, a result which should help build some confidence.

Milan finished the league phase two points better off than Feyenoord (W5, L3), but like their hosts, they were beaten away from home on matchday eight, going down 2-1 to Dinamo Zagreb. Unlike Feyenoord, they’ve remained unbeaten in league and cup action since (W2, D1), with both of those wins coming via two-goal margins, the most recent of those against Empoli on Saturday (W 2-0).

By finishing in the top 16, Sérgio Conceição’s side are seeded for this tie and will host the second leg, which might be a relief as the Rossoneri haven’t won any of their last 11 UCL knockout games on the road (D4, L7). As they also haven’t beaten a Dutch side in any of their last four meetings anywhere in major European competitions (D3, L1), this has the potential to be a nervy evening for the seven-time European champions.

Players to watch: Quinten Timber has scored Feyenoord’s opener in two of their last three games, while three of his last four goals arrived between the 30th and 55th minute. Christian Pulisic leads the way for Milan with four UCL goals this term, and has four direct goal contributions across his last five appearances (G2, A2).

Hot stat: Five of Milan’s last six UCL away games produced goals in both halves (W3, L3).
