Chelsea will need a minor miracle if they’re to overturn a 5-2 first-leg deficit against reigning UEFA Champions League (UCL) champions PSG in this last-16 tie. Chelsea are winless in the last five UCL H2Hs (D2, L3), while PSG are unbeaten in their last five UCL games against English opposition (W4, D1) and could stretch that run to six for the first time in history here. Six of Chelsea’s last seven UCL games featured over 2.5 goals.

Needing a convincing win to progress here, Chelsea’s downturn in form is far from ideally timed, with the Blues winning just one of their last six matches inside 90 minutes (D2, L3) after a 1-0 weekend home defeat against Newcastle. That latest loss harmed their Premier League top-four hopes, but they’ll have to quickly park that disappointment in search of becoming just the second team in UCL history to overturn a three-goal first-leg deficit against the holders to progress in a knockout tie. Opta’s rating of just a 7% chance of progress hardly makes great reading on that front, nor do three successive UCL knockout defeats, so avoiding four such reversals in a row for the first time ever could be the best the Blues can hope for here.

PSG are firmly in the driving seat of this tie, and after being granted the weekend off in Ligue 1, they should be fresh for this clash. The Parisians had a good weekend without kicking a ball as nearest title rivals Lens slipped up in their game, and the good times look set to keep rolling here as they stand on the brink of knocking out English opposition for a fourth successive UCL knockout tie. Four wins from their last five competitive away games (L1) suggest they could do so in style, and the holders have typically excelled at this stage under boss Luis Enrique, with PSG winning ten of their 15 UCL knockout matches while he’s been at the helm as they look to become the first side since Real Madrid in 2017/18 to successfully defend a UCL title.

Only one of Chelsea’s last six UCL home matches saw both teams score. Nine of PSG’s last ten UCL outings saw both teams score. Eight of PSG’s 11 European matches this season saw scoring after the 70th minute.

Chelsea’s Enzo Fernández was on target in the first leg and has netted five of his last six goals for the Blues after half-time. PSG’s Ousmane Dembélé has a penchant for scoring on English soil, opening the scoring in last season’s knockout games away to both Arsenal and Liverpool.

This game may come too soon in Levi Colwill’s return to fitness, while PSG remain without Fabián Ruiz.
