By their lofty standards, Chelsea and Arsenal have been starved of domestic silverware in recent years, so this Carabao Cup semi-final carries huge significance for both London outfits. Arsenal are unbeaten in the last eight H2Hs (W5, D3) and were last beaten at Stamford Bridge back in August 2018 (W3, D4). Chelsea have lost just one of the last six meetings in the League Cup (W4, D1), but that was the last time they met in this competition in 2018. Arsenal have only kept one clean sheet in their last six domestic away matches.

New Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior takes to the Stamford Bridge dugout for the first time after kicking off his reign with a 5-1 thumping of Charlton in the FA Cup, and his quickest path to the fans’ hearts is silverware as the Blues last lifted a domestic trophy back in 2017/18! Their last success in this competition came back in 2014/15, with Chelsea progressing from three of their subsequent four semi-final ties, though their only such loss came against Arsenal. They’ll be desperate to take a positive result back to the Emirates for the second leg, but as Chelsea have won just one of their last four at home (D2, L1), they could be chasing the fabled ‘new manager bounce’ to get them over the line.

It’s approaching six years since Arsenal lifted their only trophy under Mikel Arteta, but a nine-match unbeaten run across all competitions (W8, D1) means they’re competing well on four fronts. The Premier League leaders cruised past Portsmouth on Sunday in the FA Cup for a fourth successive away win, a streak that’s seen them score an impressive 11 times in total. The Gunners know that certainly doesn’t guarantee success here as they’ve fallen at this stage in two of the previous four campaigns, adding to a wretched League Cup record that’s seen Arsenal lift the trophy just twice, most recently back in 1993.

Seven of Chelsea’s last nine home games produced over 2.5 goals. Six of Chelsea’s last seven goals arrived after half-time. Arsenal’s last seven H2H away goals came in the second half.

Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández has been heavily involved recently, directly contributing to four goals (G3, A1) and receiving three yellow cards across his last five matches. Gabriel Martinelli shook off recent criticism with a hat-trick against Portsmouth – his two H2H goals both came at Stamford Bridge.

Marc Cucurella returns from suspension for Chelsea here, while Reece James and Cole Palmer are doubtful. Arsenal are hoping Piero Hincapié and Riccardo Calafiori are fit to return here.
