As the Premier League returns for the 2025/26 season, two teams who finished just outside the European spots last term meet on matchday one when Brighton Hove Albion vs Fulham. Brighton had failed to win any of the previous nine Premier League H2Hs before beating Fulham 2-1 in March. Fulham have emerged victorious from just one of their last seven league trips to Brighton (D3, L3).
Despite ending the previous campaign with three successive victories, Brighton Hove Albion fell four points short of a top seven finish to miss out on European qualification. That represented their second-highest points tally in the Premier League, but the Seagulls have since lost João Pedro to Chelsea, and are desperate to keep midfielder Carlos Baleba, who is heavily linked with a switch to Manchester United. Fabian Hürzeler’s men should be confident of a fast start regardless, as Brighton have won their season opener in each of the previous four campaigns – their longest run in club history.
Fulham’s record on the opening day pales in comparison, as they’ve emerged victorious from just one of their last eight such outings (D3, L4). A poor end to the previous season saw Marco Silva’s men slip to a bottom-half finish, and an extremely quiet summer in the transfer market has left supporters frustrated. That feeling might yet grow considering that striker Rodrigo Muniz is subject to interest from elsewhere, but the Cottagers have at least won all four of their pre-season friendlies, so do have some momentum behind them as they journey south.
Brighton Hove Albion have won five of their last eight home league games (D2, L1), netting 2+ goals in each victory. Brighton failed to score in just five Premier League games last season. None of Fulham’s last 18 Premier League games have ended level (W8, L10). Only four teams conceded fewer away goals than Fulham’s 24 in the Premier League last term.
Brighton’s Kaoru Mitoma has seen his last four strikes for the club arrive beyond the 65th minute in games involving 4+ total goals. Alex Iwobi has directly contributed to six Premier League goals against Brighton Hove Albion (G3, A3), the second-highest tally of his career.
Brighton Hove Albion could be without Adam Webster and Facundo Buonanotte, who have both been sidelined in pre-season. Fulham appear to be at full strength for the season opener.
