Brentford boss Thomas Frank believed his side did “so many things right” during their 1-0 defeat at Newcastle United this past weekend. Irrespective of his upbeat outlook, that loss extended their Premier League (PL) start to just one win from their opening five fixtures, with draws dominating their results (D3). That’s a familiar tale for the Bees, especially at home as their total of ten here since the start of last season are the most home draws in the competition during this period.

Saturday’s setback was made worse by the significant knee injury sustained by defender Rico Henry. He’ll likely be out for the rest of the campaign, which won’t make Brentford’s task of trying to secure just their third clean sheet from their last 13 home matches any easier. Just one home PL defeat across the past 12 months highlights how that’s rarely had a significant adverse impact on their results though (W8, D9).

Amid continuing troubles off the pitch despite a proposed takeover, Everton remain in a sorry state on it too, after their 1-0 loss at home to Arsenal on Sunday saw them remain as one of four sides on one point or less this campaign after five matchdays. That return matches their joint-worst PL start from the 1994/95 season, and it’s looking increasingly likely that this could be the season that the Toffees finally come unstuck in their ambitions to avoid the drop.

Particularly if heavily fancied Brentford pile on the misery, which many expect them to do because not only is form against Everton, but their history in the capital city also makes for grim reading with their last win there coming in May 2021 (D5, L8 since).

Players to watch: Bryan Mbeumo enjoys playing in front of his own fans with three strikes across Brentford’s last five home PL matches, two of which proved his side’s first on the day. Everton fans will have been happy to see Dwight McNeil make his first start last week following injury as he finished as their top PL scorer last season (G7) and scored the winner in the last H2H.

Hot stat: Everton manager Sean Dyche hasn’t won a PL match in August or September since 2019 (D4, L10).
