Aston Villa and Brentford are both enjoying productive Premier League seasons, yet this clash pits one of the division’s best sides at home against one of the worst on the road. Brentford have beaten Aston Villa twice already this season across league and cup, but Aston Villa are yet to lose a home H2H (W4, D7), scoring 3+ goals in the last three of those fixtures (W2, D1). Aston Villa have scored a competition-high 13 Premier League goals from outside the box this season.

It’s been a busy week for Aston Villa as they completed their UEFA Europa League league phase programme by beating Salzburg 3-2 and brought in familiar faces Tammy Abraham and Douglas Luiz to boost a squad still battling on three fronts. After beating Newcastle 2-0 last weekend, Unai Emery’s side ended the matchday four points behind leaders Arsenal, so avoiding back-to-back top-flight defeats at Villa Park for the first time since February 2024 feels essential if they’re to keep pressure on the Gunners after their eight-match winning league run here was ended by Everton on matchday 22 (L 1-0).

Brentford’s momentum has stalled after suffering two Premier League losses without scoring, but they start this round in the top half thanks to a six-match unbeaten top-flight run prior to those 2-0 defeats to Chelsea and Nottingham Forest (W4, D2). Not since March 2012, when they were in the third tier, have the Bees lost three consecutive league games without netting, but with a tough run of fixtures ahead – Newcastle and Arsenal are up next – Keith Andrews’ side’s resilience will be tested. That’s especially true on the road, where only struggling Wolves have lost more away Premier League fixtures than them this term (W3, L8), a serious concern as they push for European qualification.

Aston Villa conceded exactly once in each of their last four home league fixtures. Each of Brentford’s last three competitive matches produced exactly one goal in each half. Brentford have lost all six away league games this term in which they trailed at half-time.

Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers has two goal contributions across his last two appearances (G1, A1) and Aston Villa have won all six of his goalscoring appearances this term, with all six also seeing both teams score. Brentford’s Michael Kayode has collected three of his five league bookings this term away from home before half-time.

Ollie Watkins limping off with what looked like a hamstring injury against Salzburg adds to Aston Villa’s woes. Brentford’s Kristoffer Ajer and Mikkel Damsgaard are doubts after picking up injuries last weekend.
