Borussia Dortmund will look to cement their place as ‘best of the rest’ in the Bundesliga by putting bottom-of-the-league Heidenheim to the sword on home soil. Heidenheim have failed to win any of their previous five meetings with Borussia Dortmund (D2, L3), losing the last three while conceding 2+ goals each time. Borussia Dortmund have scored 2+ goals in eight of their last nine Bundesliga fixtures.
A return of just one defeat across their opening 19 Bundesliga matches this season (W12, D6) would have Borussia Dortmund in title contention in most seasons, yet they begin this matchday eight points adrift of leaders Bayern. Three successive league wins for the Black and Yellows, netting exactly three goals in each, means they’re primed to capitalise on any collapse from the champions. A 2-0 European defeat to Inter Milan in midweek may have dampened spirits slightly, but as only AC Milan are on a longer unbeaten league run across Europe’s top-five leagues than Borussia Dortmund (W8, D4), a response is expected here. Niko Kovač’s men also possess the division’s only unbeaten home record (W7, D2) making them big favourites for this one.
Heidenheim arrive at Signal Iduna Park on the opposite end of the spectrum in the Bundesliga, sitting rock-bottom of the standings having failed to win any of their last six matches (D2, L4). Conceding a league-high 42 goals in the process, FCH remain the only side across Europe’s top-five leagues yet to keep a single clean sheet this term, and that horrid run appears unlikely to end on the road. Frank Schmidt’s side have lost seven of their nine Bundesliga away matches this term (W1, D1), while scoring multiple goals in just one of those fixtures highlights that they have big problems at both ends of the pitch.
Borussia Dortmund have scored in both halves of six of their nine home league matches this term. Each of Heidenheim’s last four away league games have seen both sides score. Heidenheim have won an average of five corners per away Bundesliga match this season.
Borussia Dortmund defender Julian Ryerson has recorded three assists across his last four league games, two coming before the 15th minute. Adrian Beck netted the opener in Heidenheim’s last away game, with his side unbeaten across his five goalscoring Bundesliga appearances (W3, D2).
Borussia Dortmund’s Filippo Mané is an injury doubt, while Heidenheim’s Benedikt Gimber is suspended and Sirlord Conteh and Mikkel Kaufmann are doubtful.
