The pre-round league leaders meet the basement dwellers on Sunday, as title-chasing Barcelona host a Real Oviedo side bidding to avoid an instant return to the second tier. Barcelona won the reverse fixture 3-1 in what was the first competitive H2H since May 2001. It was Oviedo who won that particular H2H at the Camp Nou, but they lost seven of their eight La Liga away H2Hs prior (D1). Barcelona have scored 16 unanswered second-half home league goals this season.

Barcelona’s title defence faltered last weekend as they were beaten 2-1 by Real Sociedad, a result which ensured their lead atop La Liga pre-round stood at just a single point. Barça were far from convincing in midweek UEFA Champions League action either as they inched past Slavia Prague 4-2 despite falling behind, but a much better showing should be expected at home, where the Catalan giants have won all nine of their league games this term. The frightening ease at which Barcelona have been winning at home is laid bare by the fact seven of those wins came by a 2+ goal margin.

The pre-game odds combined with Real Oviedo’s recent form suggest they’ll need a minor miracle to get anything from this game. Oviedo are winless in their last 13 La Liga games (D7, L6) and have ominously won only twice all season (D7, L11), leaving them on a perilous-looking 13 points after 20 games and with a yawning seven-point gap to safety. Recent history makes for pretty bleak reading given that the last 11 teams to have accumulated 13 or fewer points at this stage of a La Liga season have gone on to be relegated, and five defeats by a 2+ goal margin from their five games so far this term against sides occupying the top-five spots pre-round hardly hint at the great escape starting here.

Barcelona have been shown a league-low 31 yellow cards this season. Oviedo have conceded a league-high eight goals in the first 30 minutes of their away league games. Eight red cards have been shown across Oviedo’s last eight matches.

Barcelona’s Robert Lewandowski was on target in midweek and in the reverse fixture, with those goals contributing to seven of his 11 strikes this season arriving after half-time. Federico Viñas has scored in successive appearances for Oviedo, and all three of his goals this term have opened the scoring on the road.

Ferran Torres missed Barcelona’s midweek European match, during which Pedri was withdrawn with an injury. Oviedo appear close to full strength.
