Alavés will be hoping the new year brings about a new trend in results, as they come into their first game in 2025 just two points above the drop zone. That’s largely down to a run of just one win in their last 12 La Liga games (D4, L7), although the more optimistic Alavés supporters will be keen to point out that they actually come into this clash unbeaten in four in league action (D4).

Three of those stalemates saw the Blue and Whites battle from behind to claim a share of the spoils, and considering two of the last three home H2Hs against Girona saw them also salvage a draw from a losing position, a repeat of history can’t be ruled out. After balancing La Liga football with their UEFA Champions League exploits for most of the season, Girona will probably have appreciated the winter break. They resume their domestic campaign 11 points shy of the top four and a whopping 20 points worse off than they were after 18 matches last season, so Míchel has his work cut out to get his side back to the levels they hit last term.

One win from their last four league games certainly hasn’t helped their quest to post successive top-four finishes (D1, L2), nor has their faltering away form this season. Girona have won just twice on the road in La Liga this term (D3, L4), but after losing their last such game against Mallorca (2-1), they can take comfort that they haven’t lost back-to-back away league games this term, which would hint at a response here.

Players to watch: Alavés’ Joan Jordán has scored in back-to-back games and now stands just one goal shy of posting his best scoring season at club level since 2018/19. Arnaut Danjuma scored his first goal for Girona before the winter break – his last five goals at club level either opened or closed the scoring.
