After their miserable 2024/25 campaign ultimately ended with a successful fight to avoid relegation, Wolverhampton Wanderers will be hoping to immediately show some promise when they host ten-time league champions Manchester City. Wolverhampton Wanderers have no major injuries. For Manchester City, the quartet of Rodri, Phil Foden, Josko Gvardiol and Mateo Kovacic all missed their last friendly through injury.

Wolverhampton Wanderers failed to win a pre-season friendly during Vítor Pereira’s first pre-season in charge, which is hardly the preparation that supporters desperate to see the club break its ‘August curse’ would want to see. Since their return to the Premier League in 2018, Wolves have won just one of 20 league matches to be played in August (D9, L10), and Pereira can ill afford the pressure that would come with a similar start, particularly as the board are yet to offer him a long-term contract despite his win rate of nearly 50% across all competitions last season (W12, D3, L10).

Manchester City purchased Wolverhampton Wanderers left-back Rayan Aït-Nouri for €36m as part of their bid to reclaim the Premier League crown after a rare trophyless season during which they finished a distant third and lost the FA Cup final to Crystal Palace. They had a busy season both on and off the pitch, continuing to fight financial fair play charges and suffering the ignominy of losing to Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal during the Round 16 of the newly reformatted Club World Cup in June. Their away record of just eight wins last league season (D5, L6) needs improvement, but with seven of those wins coming against bottom-half clubs (D3), they should be confident of gaining three points here.

Pereira was at the helm when Wolves lost 1-0 away to Manchester City in May, which forms part of Manchester City’s near-perfect H2H run of nine wins and one loss across the past five Premier League seasons. The one exception took place at Molineux in September 2023 in a 2-1 loss.

Wolverhampton Wanderers lost eight of their 11 Premier League home games as outsiders last season (W2, D1). Two-thirds of Wolves’ Premier League games last season produced over 2.5 total goals, second only to Brighton (71%). Six of Manchester City’s eight Premier League away wins last season were by a 2+ goal margin. Manchester City conceded the opening goal in just seven Premier League away games last season but lost five of them (W1, D1).

Jørgen Strand Larsen was an instrumental part of Wolverhampton Wanderers’ top-flight survival, scoring in five of their six consecutive wins in March-April. New Manchester City signing Tijjani Reijnders won ten of the 13 competitive games (D2, L1) that he scored in for AC Milan last season.
