It’s starting to feel like last chance saloon for Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Gary O’Neil, who will remain in charge of the Midlands club for this weekend’s game with Ipswich Town. It was widely expected that the loser of Monday night’s clash with West Ham would lose their job, but O’Neil is still standing despite the fact his side lost that game 2-1, a result which means they’re now four points from safety.
Wolverhampton Wanderers are at least unbeaten in seven H2Hs against Ipswich (W2, D5), but in the desperate position O’Neil’s side find themselves in, it’s wins they need, not draws. The last five of those games saw them keep a clean sheet, which picks Ipswich Town out as an ideal opponent for a Wolves side who have conceded 34 goals in 16 home league games in 2024 – the most any side has leaked at this level since Leeds in 2022.
Locked on nine points with their hosts, this game is as big for Ipswich Town as it is for Wolverhampton Wanderers in their battle to stay up in their first season back in the Premier League. Kieran McKenna certainly isn’t under anywhere near as much pressure as his managerial counterpart, but if the Tractor Boys’ three-match losing league run continues much longer, he just might be.
Ipswich Town haven’t posted longer than a three-match losing run yet this season despite their lowly position, and their sole victory this term (D6, L8) did come on the road. That will offer scant hope for an Ipswich side who have won just one of their last 16 away league games against Wolverhampton Wanderers (D6, L9), although they have interestingly won six of the last seven top-flight H2Hs, the last of which came way back in 1984.
Players to watch: Jørgen Strand Larsen has been a rare bright spark in a dark season for Wolverhampton Wanderers – four of his six goals this term have been equalisers. Ipswich Town Conor Chaplin scored his first-ever Premier League goal in their 2-1 defeat against Bournemouth last weekend, his third goal from his last four in league competitions to open the scoring.
Hot stat: Eight of Wolverhampton Wanderers last nine home league games saw both teams score.
