Things were looking fairly bleak for Wolverhampton Wanderers not too long ago, but after back-to-back Premier League wins, they come into this latest round outside the bottom three. But for those successive victories, Wolves would actually sit bottom of the table, and that pair of wins has served to massively relieve some pressure on boss Gary O’Neil, who had previously overseen their longest stretch without victory from the start of a league campaign since 1983/84 (ten matches).

It’s hard to believe that Wolverhampton Wanderers have found wins so hard to come by given they’ve scored in each of their last 11 Premier League games – the joint-longest current run in the league ahead of the round. That run could be about to grind to an abrupt halt against Bournemouth – O’Neil’s former club – against whom Wolves had drawn a scoring blank in three of the last four H2Hs (W1, D1, L2).

Despite being only four places above Wolverhampton Wanderers in the table pre-round, six points separate the Cherries from their Midlands counterparts. After picking up seven points from three games against sides who finished in the top four last season, Bournemouth’s form has nosedived since with back-to-back defeats preventing them from threatening the European picture.

Their away form certainly isn’t helping their quest to climb the table either, as Andoni Iraola’s side are winless in their last four away league outings (D1, L3). Conceding first in three of those games, Bournemouth left themselves with lots of work to do, and leaking goals in general is a running theme for a Cherries side with one clean sheet in their last 11 top-flight away games, although that sole shutout came on this ground.

Players to watch: Gonçalo Guedes got Wolverhampton Wanderers fourth in their 4-1 win against Fulham last weekend, with that his fifth successive league goal at club level to arrive after half-time. In eerily similar circumstances, Bournemouth’s David Brooks also closed the scoring last weekend, while five of his last six club goals arrived after the break.

Hot stat: Ahead of the round, Wolverhampton Wanderers have conceded a league-high eight Premier League goals after the 75th minute, while Bournemouth have scored a joint-high seven in that period.
