Tottenham’s fight for Premier League survival continues as they make the long trip north to face Sunderland, a side who’ve not won at home since early February. Following January’s 1-1 draw in the reverse fixture, Tottenham Hotspur remained unbeaten against Sunderland since April 2010 (W10, D5). Sunderland’s last six Premier League games have produced just two first-half goals.

Sunderland got themselves back on track before the international break with just one defeat from four Premier League outings (W2, D1), including a stirring 2-1 comeback victory over arch-rivals Newcastle in the Tyne-Wear derby. With just five points separating them from the top six pre-round, European qualification is still on the table for the Black Cats in their first season back in the Premier League, but just a fifth top-half finish in the top-flight in 70 years, and a first since 2010/11, is perhaps a more realistic target. Régis Le Bris’ men could be aiming far higher if not for three successive home league defeats, albeit they all came against higher-ranked opposition.

Roberto De Zerbi’s highly anticipated debut as Tottenham Hotspur boss will come with the club mired in a relegation battle and on their second-longest winless run in their league history (D5, L8). The Italian tactician has no time to get up to speed with Spurs starting this round just one point outside the relegation zone, so any repeat of his five-game winless Premier League start at former employers Brighton could be fatal for their survival chances. His squad will likely be grateful for an away game to start with as Tottenham Hotspur have collected 20 of their 30 points this term on the road and held Liverpool to a 1-1 draw on their last such trip.

Sunderland are one of three teams yet to lose a Premier League game they scored first in this season (W6, D4). Nine of Tottenham’s last 11 Premier League games produced over 2.5 goals. Tottenham Hotspur last led a Premier League game at half-time in January’s reverse fixture (HT since: D2, L9).

With four league goals this season, Chemsdine Talbi only trails Danny Welbeck (six) for goals scored in a single Premier League season when aged 20 or younger for Sunderland. Tottenham Hotspur will be desperate for Dominic Solanke to make an earlier impact, with all six of his goals this season coming after the 30th minute.

Sunderland are hoping to regain starting goalkeeper Robin Roefs and defender Daniel Ballard. Tottenham Hotspur are similarly hopeful that Mathys Tel and Mohammed Kudus can be fit to return.
