The second DFB-Pokal semi-final sees the holders Stuttgart attempt to reach another final against Freiburg, who are still in the hunt for a double this season. The home side on the day has won each of the last four H2Hs, and Freiburg were eliminated in four of the five prior DFB-Pokal meetings between the sides, including a semi-final in 2013. Freiburg have lost their last three competitive trips to Stuttgart by a 10-0 aggregate scoreline.
Following derby defeat against possible DFB-Pokal final opponents Bayern at the weekend, Stuttgart have now alternated between wins and defeats in each of their last seven outings (W3, L4). The road to the final four has been far smoother than their recent outings, with the Swabians facing just one top-flight side (Mainz), along with a trio of clashes against second-tier opponents. Stuttgart have won without reply in the previous three rounds, yet this fixture represents their first home draw in this competition since last season’s semi-final when they overcame Leipzig 3-1 before securing their fourth DFB-Pokal.
Freiburg seem to be hitting their stride at the perfect time, with four successive wins across all competitions keeping them in the hunt for a top-seven Bundesliga finish as well as booking a place in a first-ever European semi-final. History truly beckons for Julian Schuster’s men who are chasing a first piece of major silverware in club history, though they’ve only ever reached one DFB-Pokal final, cruelly losing on penalties back in 2022, but that semi-final win over Hamburg is their only progression from three prior semis.
Just one of Stuttgart’s last six competitive home games saw both teams score. Stuttgart won with multi-goal margins in five of their last six DFB-Pokal matches. Just one of Freiburg’s last 12 DFB-Pokal games progressed into extra-time. Freiburg won with 2+ goal margins in four of their last six DFB-Pokal away games.
Deniz Undav leads the way for Stuttgart with four DFB-Pokal goal contributions in this edition (G2, A2) – he has only failed to register a goal involvement in one of his last six appearances in this competition. Freiburg’s all-time top scorer Vincenzo Grifo has six goal involvements across his last seven DFB-Pokal appearances (G4, A2), while the last three of those goals proved decisive.
Stuttgart withdrew Finn Jeltsch early at the weekend. Patrick Osterhage remains Freiburg’s most notable injury concern.
