Bayern Munich’s inevitable march to their 35th German championship sees them travel to face relegation-threatened St. Pauli directly following a midweek trip to Madrid. St. Pauli are winless across the last seven H2Hs since famously beating Bayern Munchen 2-1 in 2001/02. That memorable 2-1 win shortly preceded back-to-back relegations for St. Pauli, who managed to remain in business partly thanks to fundraising efforts by none other than Bayern Munchen. St. Pauli have failed to score in a pre-round joint-league high 11 Bundesliga games this season.

St. Pauli’s two-year stint in the Bundesliga is firmly at risk as they enter the final six-game stretch in the relegation play-off position on the back of a four-game winless run (D2, L2). A mere one defeat from their last seven home games (W3, D3) suggests that the Millerntor-Stadion is the best place to try and get back on track, and facing a lofty opponent may not faze them too much. St. Pauli are unbeaten at home this season against sides starting this round in the top four (W1, D2), with the six goals they scored in those three games accounting for 43% of their seasonal home league goal tally.

That record comes under serious threat here, as they welcome a Bayern Munchen side who are unbeaten since November on the road (W11, D2) after they secured a 2-1 victory at Real Madrid in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final tie. Despite trailing 2-0 in the 80th minute to Freiburg last weekend, Bayern’s march to the Meisterschale continued thanks to a dramatic 3-2 comeback win, a result which saw them maintain a nine-point buffer to Dortmund in second. With a century of goals after 28 rounds, Bayern Munchen will surely expect to break their own Bundesliga record of 101 set back in 1971/72 here after scoring 3+ goals in all eight games this season against sides in the pre-round bottom six.

Pre-round, only Leipzig (40) have picked up fewer yellow cards than St. Pauli’s 43 in the Bundesliga this term. Bayern Munchen are yet to lose even when conceding the opening goal in league action this season (W6, D3). Nine of Bayern’s last ten competitive away games saw both teams score.

Winger Mathias Pereira Lage scored his two Bundesliga goals for St. Pauli across his last five appearances, both of which were first-half match openers. Bayern’s 18-year-old prodigy Lennart Karl hit his side’s 100th league goal of the season last weekend, while three of his five Bundesliga strikes this term arrived on or beyond the 80-minute mark.

Jackson Irvine serves a suspension for St. Pauli here, while Tomoya Ando is also a doubt. Bayern Munchen have no fresh injury concerns.
