Southampton are now at extremely short odds to be relegated after they registered just the fourth instance during the Premier League era of a club having won no more than five points after their first 15 matches of the campaign. The Saints are being outclassed at both ends of the pitch, having scored a league-low 11 goals in England’s top-flight this season, while Wolverhampton Wanderers are the only side in the division this term who have conceded more than their 31 goals ahead of the weekend.

Four of their five points have come at home, where Southampton have at least kept visiting defences busy by scoring in five consecutive Premier League matches (W1, D1, L3). Their streak of netting in each of their last 15 top-flight meetings with Tottenham Hotspur may therefore be extended here, but the likelihood of a first win at St Mary’s against Spurs since January 2020 may depend on improved defending.

Having become the first team in the Premier League this season to score 3+ goals seven times, albeit in a 4-3 loss against Chelsea, Tottenham look set to give Southampton a hard time even if they themselves have struggled to keep a clean sheet recently. The heat on manager Ange Postecoglou is intensifying after his injury-hit squad recorded the club’s joint-worst points haul after 15 rounds in 16 years.

History dictates that Spurs should do well here though, as they’re unbeaten against sides starting the day bottom of the table since May 2018 (W10, D3). Historic wins at Manchester United (3-0) and Manchester City (4-0) however remain their only triumphs away from home this league season, while dismal results at Leicester City (1-1) and Crystal Palace (L 1-0) are recent reminders of just how low they can sink.

Players to watch: Ben Brereton Díaz is on the verge of an unwanted record as he searches for his first goal in a Southampton shirt, as he could join Oliver Burke as the second player to fail to win any of their first 25 Premier League matches. Dejan Kulusevski’s career will come full circle if he makes his 100th appearance in the competition on Sunday, less than three years after his English top-flight debut against Southampton in February 2022.
