Rooted firmly to the foot of the Premier League table, Southampton were left smarting after Friday night’s 1-1 draw away to Brighton. Boss Russell Martin fumed post-match after his side were denied a winning goal by a lengthy offside VAR check, but even a win there wouldn’t have been enough to move them off the bottom as their position starts to look increasingly precarious.

The visit of high-flying Chelsea certainly doesn’t seem a timely one then. That is perhaps until you realise that the Saints did the double over Chelsea in their last Premier League campaign, while they’ve lost just two of the last seven top-flight H2Hs (W3, D2). Ominously though, Southampton have lost their last two Wednesday-held Premier League home games ‘to nil’.

That’s music to the ears of Chelsea, who have won their last two games 2-0 and 3-0 respectively, downing Aston Villa on Sunday to take a share of second place. With an identical record to Arsenal across the board, only alphabetical order sees Chelsea start the round in third, although any title aspirations are dampened by the fact they sit nine points behind league leaders Liverpool.

Arne Slot’s side are the only team to beat Chelsea on the road in the Premier League this term (W4, D1, L1), and it’s hard to see Enzo Maresca’s side not adding another win here. That’s because they boast a formidable record against sides starting this midweek round in the bottom half (W6, D1), with all four away games in that run ending in victory.

Players to watch: Southampton’s Cameron Archer has opened the scoring with each of his last five Premier League goals. Compare that with Chelsea’s Cole Palmer who has closed the scoring on his last four top-flight scoring appearances.

Hot stat: Seven of Chelsea’s last eight Wednesday-held Premier League away games saw over 2.5 goals.
