FC Salzburg and Real Madrid head into their final FIFA Club World Cup (CWC) Group H game locked on four points (W1, D1) with both sides knowing a win will seal a place in the second round. Real Madrid ran out comfortable 5-1 winners in the only previous H2H meeting, which came in the league phase of last season’s UEFA Champions League. Salzburg have a poor record against Spanish clubs (W5, D4, L15) and ominously for them, Real Madrid have only lost one of their last 16 games against Austrian opponents (W10, D5).

Sunday’s goalless draw against Al-Hilal extended Salzburg’s unbeaten streak to four competitive matches (W3, D1) but failing to score for the first time in 17 games has left the group wide open. Salzburg will progress however they fare here if Al-Hilal don’t beat Pachuca, but they’ll be keen to take care of business themselves here as they seek to get back to winning ways. Yet after losing seven of their eight UEFA Champions League league phase games, facing elite European opposition doesn’t bode well in that quest.

After beating Pachuca 3-1 to secure their first win under new boss Xabi Alonso, Real Madrid’s victory was overshadowed by the returning Antonio Rüdiger reporting he had been racially abused by opposing captain Gustavo Cabral. Los Blancos worked hard to overcome Raúl Asencio’s early red card with a gutsy performance and have now gone five matches without defeat (W4, D1), but having conceded at least once in their last six Club World Cup games, there are warning signs there that their run could grind to a halt.

There were goals in both halves in four of Salzburg’s last five competitive fixtures. Salzburg have collected fewer than three bookings in each of their last six games. Real Madrid have won their last four meetings with Austrian sides by an aggregate score of 19-3. Each of Real Madrid’s last five Club World Cup wins were by at least a two-goal margin.

Karim Onisiwo completed the scoring for Salzburg against Pachuca on matchday one (W 2-1) with his third consecutive strike to arrive after the 75th minute. Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham also netted against Pachuca in the group stage, with Real Madrid winning on nine of his last 11 goalscoring appearances.

Salzburg have no fresh injury concerns. Amid a host of defensive absentees, Real Madrid will also be without Asencio through suspension, while forward Kylian Mbappé is still recovering from gastroenteritis.
