Salernitana are still searching for their first Serie A (SA) victory of the season (D4, L6) following a 1-0 loss at Genoa last week in which they failed to score for the sixth time in ten league matches. If he hadn’t already, new boss Filippo Inzaghi has surely by now realised the magnitude of the task ahead of him after replacing Paulo Sousa in the hot seat in October.
At the other end, the Campania outfit have failed to keep a single SA clean sheet this term, last taking the lead and winning in the top-flight way back in May. On a similar note, they haven’t had their noses in front in any game since their trip to Roma in August, an encounter which saw them concede the first of eight SA goals beyond the 75th minute so far in 2023/24 – the most of all SA teams.
Napoli haven’t yet hit the heights of last season’s glorious Scudetto-winning campaign following Luciano Spalletti’s departure, but a rousing comeback from 2-0 down to take a point against AC Milan on Sunday certainly provided some positives. Current manager Rudi Garcia will perhaps be glad that his team are back on the road too, having suffered all three defeats under his stewardship at home.
The reigning SA champions have on just one occasion failed to score at least twice on their travels this SA season, whilst also displaying resilience to earn four points from losing positions at newly promoted pair Frosinone and Genoa. Victory at Stadio Arechi seems imperative for the Partenopei if they are to prevent league leaders Inter Milan pulling further clear of them by the end of the weekend, but head-to-head history is on Napoli’s side against Salernitana as they boast a ten-match unbeaten H2H run (W6, D4).
Players to watch: Boulaye Dia netted a double in Salernitana’s last home game against Cagliari and put Napoli’s title triumph on hold last season with a late equaliser at Stadio Diego Armando Maradona in April. Giacomo Raspadori has certainly stepped up in Victor Osimhen’s absence with three goal involvements in as many matches (G2, A1), but he has never scored against Salernitana despite never having lost to them in three career meetings (W1, D2).
Hot streak: Salernitana haven’t scored a first half goal in their last nine SA games.
