Before a ball was kicked in Serie A this season, few would have predicted that Roma and Lecce would meet with both looking to keep their distance to the relegation zone. It’s been a sobering season for the hosts, who are winless in three matches under their third manager of the campaign, Claudio Ranieri, (D1, L2), with both defeats coming in the league without scoring a single goal.

They’ve suffered four successive league losses now, while the Giallorossi have also emerged empty-handed from their last two home outings, and could lose three in a row at the Stadio Olimpico for the first time since April 2011. The chances of them suffering such a fate appear slim ahead of Lecce’s visit to the capital, as Roma have only ever lost this fixture twice (W25, D10).

In fact, only Inter and Juventus (30) have beaten Lecce more than Roma, though the visitors displayed they’ve no intimidation against their main tormentors when scoring a 93rd-minute equaliser to rescue a 1-1 draw against Juventus last time out. That came on the back of a 1-0 win over Venezia to mark a solid start under new boss Marco Giampaolo, with two points separating them from the drop zone ahead of the round.

Steering clear of a survival scrap now depends on Lecce finding their form on the road, as the win at Venezia ended an eight-match winless run in Serie A away matches (D3, L5). Remarkably, the last seven games in that sequence saw them fail to score, unsurprisingly marking them out as the poorest attacking side in Italy’s top-flight at this stage (GF: 7).

Players to watch: Roma’s last two Serie A goals were scored by Stephan El Shaarawy, who appears likelier to strike late as four of his last five goals for the Giallorossi came after half-time. Four of Lecce’s seven league goals this term were either scored or assisted by Nikola Krstović (G2, A1) and Ante Rebić (G1), with the latter netting his first of the season against Juventus last time out.

Hot stat: These are the only two sides in Serie A yet to score in the first 15 minutes so far this season.
