Real Sociedad’s quest to return to La Liga’s top half faces an enormous obstacle when they host league leaders and recent Supercopa de España winners Barcelona. Real Sociedad have lost 19 of the last 22 H2Hs (W2, D1), though their last home game against Barça delivered one of those two victories.

On the face of it, Real Sociedad’s pre-round standing of 11th makes them look a secure mid-table side, but their mere four-point cushion to the drop zone tells a very different story, with most of that owing to a 2-1 victory over Getafe in the last round. Victory brought an end to a five-game winless slump in La Liga (D2, L3), and with no immediate danger of being dragged back into the depths of the table, La Real can perhaps start to look up rather than down. Things seem to be much more positive as they’re now unbeaten in five competitive games (W3, D2) after beating Osasuna in midweek Copa del Rey action, form they’ll now look to transfer into their home league campaign given they’re winless in three such matches (D1, L2).

Owing to those Supercopa exploits, it’s now two weeks since Barcelona last played in La Liga, and again showcasing their dominance on their return seems likely given that each of their nine successive league wins came by a 2+ goal margin. You’d have to go back almost a decade to March 2016 to find the last time Barça won ten La Liga games in a row, and while achieving that feat seems the most likely outcome here, all eight of their dropped points this season coming on the road does hint at a little travelling vulnerability.

Ten of Real Sociedad’s last 11 league games saw both teams score. There was a 1-0 half-time scoreline in six of Real Sociedad’s last seven La Liga fixtures. Barcelona won six of their last eight La Liga games in which they conceded first. Barcelona have conceded ten of their 15 away league goals this season before half-time.

Brais Méndez has seen his last six club goals serve as Real Sociedad’s first of the match, four of them putting them up 1-0. Following his braces in both Supercopa games, a rampant Raphinha has scored in four of his last five starts, including three match openers.
