Real Oviedo continue their hunt for their first points since promotion by hosting Real Madrid, the team with more La Liga titles than any other (36). These sides haven’t met since November 2002, but Madrid are unbeaten across the last six H2Hs (W3, D3), winning two of the last three meetings 4-0. Alonso is also unbeaten across two much more recent managerial H2Hs when in charge of Real Sociedad B (W1, D1).
There was to be no fairytale for Real Oviedo as they launched their first Spanish top-flight campaign since 2000/01 with a 2-0 defeat at Villarreal last Friday, becoming the first team to miss a penalty and go down to ten men in a La Liga opener since 2019/20. A festival atmosphere can still be expected at Estadio Carlos Tartiere, where Los Azules have won six of their last seven games (D1), which might give them some hope of an upset win.
Real Madrid beat Osasuna 1-0 at the Bernabéu on Tuesday in a game where they were heavily indebted to Kylian Mbappé, who won and then converted the crucial penalty. That extended their run of league games without a draw to 15 (W12, L3), and Los Blancos’ less-than-convincing performance can perhaps be attributed to having three debutants in the XI, and another from the bench. Xabi Alonso therefore got off to a winning managerial start in La Liga, but also admitted there is still room for improvement as his players adapt to his tactical demands.
Real Oviedo haven’t won their first home league game of the season since 2016/17 (D5, L3). Across Real Oviedo’s last seven home fixtures, there were an average of 2.29 goals per game in regulation time. Real Madrid have won 44 league penalties since the start of the 2021/22 season – more than any team in Europe’s top-five leagues. There were exactly eight corners in three of Real Madrid’s last four La Liga away fixtures.
Real Oviedo will likely field home hero Santi Cazorla at some point in this fixture, but he’s managed just one win against Real Madrid from 18 career H2Hs (D5, L12), and that sole success came back in December 2006. Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappé has scored twice after the 50th minute and been booked twice across his last three appearances.
Real Oviedo’s Alberto Reina will miss this one after being sent off against Villarreal while Lucas Ahijado and Santiago Colombatto remain out due to injury. Real Madrid have no new injury problems.
