By their own exceptionally high standards set in last season’s La Liga and UEFA Champions League winning campaign, Real Madrid have made a lacklustre start to the new top-flight season (W1, D2). Boss Carlo Ancelotti affirmed he expects more from his side after a 1-1 draw away to Las Palmas, and after claiming the problems Real are facing are clear for all to see, he insisted his side now have to “find the solution”.

You’d fully expect Los Blancos to find that solution at the Santiago Bernabéu, where they are unbeaten in their last 25 La Liga outings (W21, D4). Only two teams held them goalless in that run – Real Betis were one of them and although a repeat would seem unlikely given the talent at the hosts’ disposal, four of the last five H2Hs hosted by Madrid have incredibly ended 0-0.

Real Betis may fancy their chances of stifling Real again considering their exceptional record at Real Madrid over the last seven games (W2, D4, L1) and given that they travel to the capital on the back of a run of three successive clean sheets. Those shutouts helped them on their way to victories ‘to nil’ against Kryvbas in the UEFA Conference League and booked their spot in the league phase, but amidst balancing domestic and European campaigns, Real Betis have made a sluggish start in La Liga (D2).

Only once in the nine seasons prior have Real Betis failed to win any of their first three games in a top-flight campaign, but they’ve got their work cut out to stretch that run here against Real Madrid side who they’ve lost 63 historical games against in La Liga – second only to Barcelona (73). There’s another strange quirk for them to overcome here too in the fact they’ve won only three of their last 15 La Liga games held on a Sunday (D6, L6).

Players to watch: Still goalless in La Liga since arriving from PSG, Kylian Mbappé scored on matchday four in three of his last four seasons for PSG – twice netting a brace, while each of the three goalscoring appearances saw him score the game opener. Abde Ezzalzouli was at the double in Europe for Real Betis, and although he’s started both La Liga games this term on the bench, the fact all six of his Spanish top-flight goals have arrived after half-time suggests he could make an impact as a substitute.

Hot stat: Eleven of Real Madrid’s last 15 home league goals arrived after the break.
