A domestically rampant Real Madrid look to strengthen their title challenge as they welcome a floundering Rayo Vallecano side who are flirting with the bottom three. Real Madrid are currently enjoying their longest-ever run of unbeaten La Liga home H2Hs against Rayo (W13, D2). With 32 losses from 45 La Liga meetings at any venue, Rayo have lost more often in La Liga against Real than any other side. Real Madrid are the only La Liga side with a 100% winning record when scoring first this season (W15).
After dramatically failing to achieve a top-eight finish in the UEFA Champions League following a 4-2 defeat to Benfica, Real Madrid must swiftly turn their attention back to La Liga matters as they look to keep the pressure on leaders Barcelona. The omens are positive for Real after putting together a five-game winning streak in La Liga, two of which came under the tutelage of caretaker boss Álvaro Arbeloa. The last four of those victories also came by 2+ goal margins, and another will secure Real’s longest such sequence since 2017. An eye-catching record against bottom-nine sides this season (W9, D1), should boost belief of achieving that feat whilst also securing the three points they need to temporarily move to the La Liga summit.
After suffering a second straight league defeat last weekend, Rayo Vallecano entered this round precariously positioned just one point above the bottom three with a lower points haul than at the same stage of any of their last five top-flight campaigns. Those two defeats are part of a wider sequence of one win in 11 league outings for Rayo (D5, L5), though one of those stalemates was a hard-fought 0-0 in the reverse. Playing away from home will only add to the sense of trepidation here though, as only Alavés have picked up fewer than Rayo’s single point across their previous five league trips.
Six of Real Madrid’s nine home league wins this season came by a 2+ goal margin. Six of Rayo’s last eight top-flight matches saw exactly one first-half goal scored. Rayo have conceded a pre-round joint-league high 13 second-half away goals.
Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappé has scored the match opener 21 times in La Liga since the start of last season, the most of any player across Europe’s top-five leagues in that period. Rayo’s Jorge de Frutos could secure his highest-scoring La Liga season with another goal here – he scored first on four of his five scoring league appearances this term.
Trent Alexander-Arnold edges closer to a return for Real, but this game may come too soon. Rayo seemingly have no fresh injury concerns.
