Real Betis and Real Madrid are both back to winning ways and with each boasting excellent records in Friday-night La Liga games, something has to give in this clash. Although Real Madrid have lost just one of the last 11 H2Hs (W5, D5), that defeat was in last term’s corresponding fixture. Real Betis are also unbeaten across the last three meetings they hosted (W1, D2). Real Betis are unbeaten across their last 16 La Liga games played on a Friday (W10, D6).
Real Betis ended their five-match winless run in all competitions (D3, L2) by beating Girona 3-2 in La Liga on Tuesday, a win made sweeter as Isco made his long-awaited return to action after five months out. Manuel Pellegrini’s side are on course for another European campaign next term and are in line to improve on last term’s sixth-place finish, especially if they continue to frustrate opponents at Estadio de La Cartuja. They’re unbeaten here in the league since early December (W3, D4), although they’ve drawn the last four of those games, increasing the possibility of drawing five consecutive home league games for the first time since a sequence between February and April 2009.
Real Madrid also ended a winless sequence on Tuesday, beating Alavés 2-1 to register their first competitive win in almost a month (D1, L3) and keep some pressure on La Liga leaders Barcelona. While that victory should restore some confidence for Los Blancos, it was still an unconvincing performance that stretched their run of league games without a clean sheet to nine. Persistent defensive vulnerability has also contributed to them alternating between wins and defeats in away league matches since the start of February (W2, L2), a pattern they must break if they’re to keep their slim title hopes alive.
Four of Real Betis’s last five home league fixtures saw both teams score. Real Madrid haven’t lost a La Liga game played on a Friday since May 2002 (W7, D2). Each of Real Madrid’s last three away league matches produced exactly three goals.
Marc Roca netted Real Betis’s opener against Girona but four of his last five goals arrived after the 60th minute. Kylian Mbappé opened the scoring for Real Madrid against Alavés but four of his last seven league goals came after the 85th minute, three of them from the penalty spot.
Junior Firpo, Diego Llorente and Ángel Ortiz all missed Real Betis’s midweek match and are not expected to feature here, while Real Madrid will assess Éder Militão after he exited before half-time against Alavés.
