Real Betis will want to move on quickly after a week to forget saw them lose to Sparta Prague in the UEFA Europa League and then draw 0-0 against La Liga (LL) strugglers Almería. With their last four league/European games producing just four goals (W1, D2, L1), entertainment has been in short supply, but so have defeats, as they’re unbeaten in ten LL fixtures (W4, D6), putting them in a healthy top-half position.
Los Verdiblancos are yet to lose a home league game this term (W5, D2) and have won their last four home LL fixtures, so Manuel Pellegrini’s side will carry some hope of maintaining that record, particularly after drawing here against Real Madrid 0-0 last term. That was a rare avoidance of defeat in this fixture’s recent history though, as they’ve only won one of the last nine H2Hs at Estadio Benito Villamarín (D2, L6).
Madrid top the LL table after making it three league wins in a row by beating Granada 2-0 last weekend, although injury problems remain an issue after Dani Carvajal was forced off with a calf injury at half-time. Goalkeeper Kepa and midfielder Luka Modrić are now available, so things are getting a little better for manager Carlo Ancelotti, who has never seen his side concede a goal in an away H2H against Betis (W2, D1).
However, with Carvajal joining Thibaut Courtois, Éder Militão and Eduardo Camavinga on the sidelines, his defence doesn’t seem quite as watertight these days as they go in search of extending their unbeaten LL away streak (W3, D1). Thankfully for Los Blancos, their forwards have eased the pressure on the defence by netting an average of 2.25 goals per game across that sequence.
Players to watch: Madrid must be wary of Willian José as he opened the scoring in each of Betis’ last three home LL fixtures, twice within the opening 20 minutes. But at least the visitors have Rodrygo back in form as he’s netted five goals across their last three league games, four times after the break.
Hot stat: Both Betis (W5) and Madrid (W7) have 100% win records after leading at half-time in LL this term.
