Having lost three of their last four La Liga outings (W1), including back-to-back defeats which culminated with a 1-0 reverse to Sevilla last time out, Rayo Vallecano will be aware of the importance of getting their season back on track. Despite their poor domestic form, they are comfortably in mid-table ahead of the matchday, sitting six points above the relegation zone and the same total away from La Liga’s top six.

It should be noted, however, that this is Rayo’s worst 14-game start to a top-flight campaign since the 2018/19 campaign, a season in which they were relegated. A return to Vallecas, where they’ve suffered just one defeat in their last five outings (W2, D2), could be the key for the Madrid side, even if the last time Rayo won a home league H2H was way back in 2014 (D2, L3).

It would be an understatement to say that this isn’t the ideal time to face opponents Athletic Bilbao, who disposed of Elfsborg 3-0 in the UEFA Europa League in midweek as part of a streak which has seen the Basque club lose just one of their last 15 games in all competitions (W9, D5).

Despite being a side famed for the attacking talents of the Williams’ brothers, Athletic have actually been impressive at the back, most recently shutting out Basque rivals Real Sociedad in a 1-0 La Liga win last weekend. And having not conceded more than once in a single game in their last eight outings (W5, D3), the good times just keep rolling for Athletic, who welcomed back Euro 2024 winning goalkeeper Unai Simón against Elfsborg.

Players to watch: Sergio Camello is often Rayo’s go-to man as they haven’t lost when he has found the back of the net since January 2023, while he also provided an assist the last time Rayo scored in a H2H. There’s no doubt about Nico Williams’ threat for Athletic as he’s assisted in three consecutive outings for club and country and struck in both H2H fixtures last season.
