It’s been a mixed February so far for Osasuna (W1, D1, L1), but they’ve only won one of their last 11 La Liga games (D7, L3), a run that started with a 4-0 defeat to upcoming opponents Real Madrid in November. Thanks in part to those draws however – no side has more than their ten in the Spanish top-flight this season – they’re still firmly in the fight for the top six.
That battle for European qualification promises to excite and intrigue as the campaign develops, with four clubs, including Osasuna, starting this round of fixtures on 31 points behind sixth-placed Rayo Vallecano (35). Los Rojillos face a stern challenge to add to that tally here though, as they haven’t won a home H2H since January 2011 (D3, L7), losing each of the last three while conceding at least twice.
Real Madrid drew 1-1 with cross-city rivals and fellow La Liga title contenders Atlético last week to preserve their one-point lead at the top of the table, which is an impressive effort considering the lack of fit defenders manager Carlo Ancelotti has at his disposal. That didn’t hold them back in midweek either as they produced a dramatic late comeback to beat Manchester City 3-2 in the UEFA Champions League.
While Los Blancos have a formidable record against Osasuna, losing none of the last 22 H2Hs anywhere (W17, D5), there are reasons to be wary given that they lost their last league away game 1-0 to Espanyol. Defeat would present Atlético with an opportunity to return to the summit, so it’s imperative that Madrid avoid consecutive La Liga losses on the road for the first time since May 2023.
Players to watch: Ante Budimir scored a brace in Osasuna’s last home match (W 2-1 v Real Sociedad) and is yet to lose a game in which he has netted this season (W7, D4), while Jude Bellingham’s late winner for Real Madrid in Manchester was his fourth consecutive goal in all competitions to arrive after the 55th minute.
Hot streak: Carlo Ancelotti has never lost a managerial H2H against Osasuna (W9, D3), with Madrid scoring exactly four times in each of the last three of those (W3).
