The ‘new manager bounce’ was in full effect as Nottingham Forest came from a goal down to beat Newcastle 3-1 and register their first win under Nuno Espírito Santo’s stewardship. The Portuguese boss described his side’s performance as “spot on” as the Tricky Trees ended a seven-match winless run (D1, L6) in the Premier League (PL), although results elsewhere mean that they’re still just two points clear of the relegation zone pre-round.
Nuno lost his bow at the City Ground, and that was Nottingham Forest’s fourth successive defeat on home soil in the PL. That’s their worst such run in the top-flight since suffering five losses on the bounce in early 1999 in a sequence that included a thumping 8-1 loss to upcoming opponents Manchester United – a side they’ve lost five consecutive H2Hs against since promotion.
The Red Devils might just have their tails up after a stirring 3-2 Boxing Day victory over Aston Villa saw them come from two goals down to win a PL match for a competition-record 14th time. Manager Erik ten Hag’s half-time message to “keep believing” paid dividends, as United ended a four-match scoreless streak to relieve some of the mounting pressure on the Dutchman’s position.
Since beating Everton in late November though, they’ve failed to score in three consecutive PL away matches (D1, L2). Finding the back of the net has been a consistent problem, with only three sides netting fewer than Manchester United’s 21 in the PL this term. But if the goals are to flow, expect it to be after half-time given 15 of their 21 league goals this term have come in the second half of matches.
Players to watch: Former Manchester United winger Anthony Elanga is thriving at Forest, directly contributing to nine goals in the PL this term (G4, A5), two of which came in the victory over Newcastle (A2). Old academy stablemate Alejandro Garnacho scored the Red Devils’ first two against Aston Villa, with all four of the games he’s netted in this season seeing his side score exactly three times overall.
