After their Carabao Cup defence was unceremoniously ended in midweek, Newcastle are desperate to end a dreadful recent run of form when they host Brentford in Premier League action. Brentford’s 3-1 victory in the reverse fixture gives them the chance to post a first-ever top-flight winning double over Newcastle. The Magpies have avoided defeat in each of the last ten H2Hs they hosted in all competitions (W9, D1). Newcastle have won just one of their ten league games against teams starting this round in the top eight (D2, L7).

A humbling 3-1 defeat at Manchester City saw Newcastle comfortably beaten in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup, while it also stretched their ongoing winless run to four matches across all competitions (D1, L3). The Magpies have conceded seven times across the last two of those defeats, with boss Eddie Howe even admitting the manner in which his side are conceding goals is “worrying”. He’d usually be more confident of an improvement at home, yet they’ve followed a 13-match unbeaten run at St James’ Park (W11, D2) by losing two of their last three outings here (W1), failing to score in both defeats.

Brentford sit three points better off than their hosts after they put a two-match losing run behind them in impressive fashion, winning 1-0 away at title contenders Aston Villa despite playing the entire second half with ten men. Manager Keith Andrews was left with “immense pride” at a fourth victory in five competitive away matches (L1), with the latest of those leaving the Bees just three points shy of the top six pre-round. And while this looks a tricky trip on paper, Brentford are starting to flex their muscles on the road, with 75% (9/12) of their seasonal away points coming across their last four Premier League trips (W3, L1).

Newcastle have conceded 22 of their 33 Premier League goals this season after half-time. Pre-round, only two sides have led more games at half-time this term than Brentford (HT: W10, D5, L9). Just one of Brentford’s last eight away games saw both teams score.

Newcastle’s Yoane Wissa was involved in five goals in this fixture as a Brentford player (G3, A2), and will be desperate to haunt his former club as he’s netted just once in his last ten appearances. Brentford’s matchwinner last week, Dango Ouattara has never scored in back-to-back Premier League games, yet despite blanking in all six prior H2Hs with Newcastle, he’s registered two assists and never lost against them (W3, D3).

Anthony Gordon is a doubt for Newcastle after appearing to suffer a hamstring injury in midweek, while Brentford’s Kevin Schade is suspended.
