After back-to-back away wins, Napoli will be aiming to round off 2024 with another victory to keep up their bid to reclaim the Serie A title. Antonio Conte’s men have recovered admirably from a pair of defeats to Lazio across league and cup at the start of the month, spending Christmas in second place just two points adrift of leaders Atalanta. The Partenopei are big favourites to close that gap again here as they host Venezia looking to build on an impressive recent record against newly-promoted opposition in Serie A (W8, D5).

The meanest defence in the division should be confident of another shutout considering they’ve kept clean sheets in three of the last four H2Hs (W2, D2). That run includes a pair of 2-0 wins in 2021/22 the last time Venezia were in the top-flight, while not since March 1942 have Napoli lost a H2H in the Italian top-flight.

Venezia’s Christmas was made all the better for a three-match unbeaten run (W1, D2) that lifted them off the foot of the table. Most significantly, four of the five points accrued in that run came against fellow strugglers Cagliari and Como, giving the Winged Lions impetus in their fight for survival, though those hopes depend on improving their miserable away form.

Their return of three away points is the lowest tally in Serie A this term (D3, L6), with the 19 goals they’ve conceded therein a league-high. Upsetting the odds in Naples for a first H2H away win (D5, L4) could lift Eusebio Di Francesco’s men out of the drop zone, but after beating Cagliari 2-1 last time out, it’ll require them to win successive top-flight matches for the first time since November 2021.

Players to watch: André-Frank Zambo Anguissa is in fine form after a goal in both of his last two games, improving his strong record when finding the net for Napoli (W6, L1). Venezia have scored in only two of their last four away games, but Mikael Egill Ellertsson got the ball rolling with his team’s opener in both.
