Even after a 1-0 home defeat in the Derby de la Côte d’Azur last weekend, Monaco can still be pleased with their start as they bid to chase down just a second Ligue 1 title in over two decades. Just two points separate them from the peak heading into round seven, and the principality side have picked up more points than at the same stage of any season since they had won five of their opening six on the way to a second-place finish in 2017/18.

Monaco scored six unanswered goals here at Stade Louis II prior to their latest defeat but there’s no guarantee of an immediate resurgence having lost this corresponding fixture in each of the last two campaigns. Even so, the hosts often deliver when fancied by the bookmakers, boasting one of the league’s best win rates as pre-match favourites since the start of last season (60% – W21, D7, L7).

Visiting Marseille have also lost just once in league action this term (W2, D3, L1), although they do come into this game on the back of that sole defeat as interim boss Jacques Abardonado became the first manager ever to make his league debut in Le Classique. That 4-0 humbling means it is now three games without a league win for Marseille, their joint-longest such run in almost a year.

That picture becomes even more bleak when zooming in on Marseille’s away form, as they’re without a road league win since April (D2, L4 since) despite taking the lead in their two Ligue 1 trips prior to the PSG hammering. With seven goals conceded in just two games under their caretaker boss, newly appointed manager Gennaro Gattuso will need to bring some stability to this iconic club.

Players to watch: Folarin Balogun was one to watch for the wrong reasons last weekend as he became the first player to miss two penalties in a Ligue 1 game since 2007, yet the Monaco man did score in his previous two games for club & country. His former Arsenal teammate Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has scored two of Marseille’s three goals since Marcelino’s resignation, each on either side of half-time in their last Europa League outing.

Hot stat: Monaco have picked up five of their 11 points so far this season from losing positions (W1, D2, L1).
