For the first time in over 17 years, Lyon and Manchester United will lock horns on the European stage, this time in a UEFA Europa League (UEL) quarter-final. Lyon steamrolled FCSB 7-1 on aggregate to get here, and after coming from behind to beat Lille in Ligue 1 at the weekend, should be full of confidence as they look for a first-ever H2H victory (D2, L2).

Lyon have only faced Barcelona (eight) more often without ever winning in Europe, and the omens are certainly against them here as they’ve lost each of their last three two-legged ties against English opponents. The prize for ending that streak would be a first UEL semi-final in eight years, and having lost just three of their last 28 European home matches (W14, D11), Paulo Fonseca’s men might feel they can get off to a solid start in this tie.

That should give the travelling supporters confidence, as should a formidable record against French opposition that’s seen Manchester United emerge victorious from each of their last five such two-legged ties and lose just four of 30 H2Hs against French sides (W16, D10).

Players to watch: Rayan Cherki has assisted eight of Lyon’s 23 UEL goals this season – he leads the way in that regard in the competition as a whole. Bruno Fernandes has achieved the highest Flashscore rating in three of his last four Manchester United appearances, including his last UEL outing in which he scored a hat-trick against Sociedad.
