It’s been a case of so far, so good for Leganés on their return to La Liga (W3, D5, L5) as they sit in lower mid-table ahead of the weekend, having won two of their last three league games (L1). They’re faring better than the other two sides that were promoted with them last term, but victory over Sevilla (1-0) in their last match came at a cost, with Enric Franquesa suffering a potentially season-ending knee injury.

The Cucumbers are reportedly interested in bringing former Real Madrid star Marcelo back to Spain to cover his absence, although until the January transfer window opens, they’ll have to make do with what they have. All three of Leganés’ wins in La Liga this term have come at home however, so restarting after the international break at Estadio Municipal de Butarque might be helpful as they chase a first-ever league H2H victory anywhere (D2, L6).

But Real Madrid are hindered themselves after Éder Militão, Lucas Vázquez and Rodrygo all suffered injuries during their 4-0 win over Osasuna before November’s international hiatus. As Real Madrid see their squad depth tested, they’re protecting an unbeaten run in league away matches that stretches back to late September 2023 (W12, D8) as they look to stay in touch with leaders and fierce rivals Barcelona. However, they’ve won none of their last three visits here in all competitions (D2, L1), so a potentially uncomfortable evening awaits.

Players to watch: Juan Cruz has scored in two of Leganés’ last three competitive games, on both occasions netting between the 40th and 55th minutes, while Real Madrid will hope that Brahim Díaz can translate his form for Morocco to the domestic arena after bagging five goals during the international break – four of them before the 25th minute.
