A 2-1 victory at Cagliari on Monday was a perfect way for Lazio to pick themselves up after back-to-back defeats, with the win restoring their Serie A top-four status. On a positive note for the Biancocelesti, they have gained exactly the same number of points (42) as at this stage two years ago when they eventually finished second, while they have won 13 of their opening 23 league games in a season for the first time since 2020/21.

Despite that, head coach Marco Baroni would appreciate success in this fixture, as after winning six of the opening seven Serie A home matches (D1) this campaign, Lazio have failed to secure victory in their last four such games (D2, L2), and another failure here would represent their longest such run since January 2016. Improving the defence wouldn’t hurt in that pursuit, as the Rome outfit have conceded in their last six encounters as hosts in all competitions, while keeping only three clean sheets in 16 home outings this term.

Eight defeats in their last nine league matches (W1) have left Monza rooted to the foot of the table, staring ominously at a return to Serie B after three campaigns in the top flight. After a glimmer of hope thanks to 2-1 victory over Fiorentina last month, Salvatore Bocchetti’s men have lost all three games since, failing to score in the last two of those, making their situation increasingly desperate.

The departures of Daniel Maldini and Milan Djurić, who have scored seven of their 20 league goals this season, haven’t helped their situation. With Monza failing to find the net more than once in their last eight away outings (D2, L6), while conceding at least twice in their last five such games all of which were lost, any chance of a turnaround here seems remote.

Players to watch: Mattia Zaccagni has scored in three of his last four matches, including making it 1-0 before half-time at Cagliari, having done the same at Monza in November – the eventual winning goal in that game. After the January transfer window, Dany Mota is the only Monza player to have netted at least four Serie A goals this season, with three of those arriving in or after the 70th minute.

Hot stat: Lazio’s home matches have seen a league-high eight goals scored in the opening 15 minutes this term ahead of this weekend.
