Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich will be looking to bounce back from their first league defeat of the season when they face relegation-threatened Hamburg. Bayern have won each of the last nine meetings, keeping a clean sheet in each of the last five after winning the reverse fixture 5-0. Bayern have scored 22 of their 32 away league goals this season after the break.

Hamburg’s quest for survival hasn’t been helped by winning none of their last five matches (D3, L2), and they consequently find themselves in 14th place pre-round. Consecutive 0-0 draws appear positive on the face of it, but considering both were against fellow bottom-half dwellers, including in the Hamburg derby against St Pauli last week, it was a huge opportunity missed for Hamburg to ease their relegation fears. Securing maximum returns at home certainly isn’t out of the question for a Hamburg side who’ve collected 15 of their 18 Bundesliga points this season at home, while only Dortmund have conceded fewer than the nine goals in such matches than HSV have.

Bayern’s shock 2-1 loss to Augsburg last Saturday ended their 27-match unbeaten run in the league and means that they are now looking to avoid back-to-back Bundesliga defeats for the first time since April 2024. Normal service was resumed in midweek as a heavily rotated Bayern side beat PSV 2-1 to complete a near perfect league phase campaign in the UEFA Champions League (W7, L1). Getting back to winning ways domestically shouldn’t be too much of a problem either, at least not if their phenomenal Bundesliga away record this season is anything to go by (W8, D1).

Hamburg have scored 12 of their 17 league goals this season after half-time. Hamburg take a pre-round league-low average of 3.76 corners per game. Eighteen of Bayern’s 19 league games this term saw at least one first-half goal.

Nicolai Remberg is no stranger to getting on the wrong side of the referee, as the Hamburg midfielder has already been booked eight times this season. Bayern defender Hiroki Ito opened the scoring against Augsburg – the fourth of his last five goals for club or country to have arrived inside the opening 25 minutes.

Hamburg’s Alexander Røssing-Lelesiit went off injured last Friday, while Fabio Baldé and Damion Downs are also doubtful for this weekend. Bayern don’t seem to have any fresh absentees.
