Sitting just three points above the bottom three going into the weekend, Getafe’s mission at the midway point of the season couldn’t be clearer: avoid relegation. One of the toughest tasks in La Liga lies ahead of them this Saturday, with Spanish giants Barcelona visiting Estadio Coliseum – a side they haven’t beaten in eight straight encounters at any venue (D3, L5).
At least they arrive in good form, with victory in their last league outing at Las Palmas – their second of a three-match winning run – leading manager José Bordalás to state that his side have perfectly coped with injuries and a hectic schedule. He might not be used to such great form from his men, who will now be aiming for four consecutive wins for the very first time since he began his second spell in charge of the club in April 2023.
Fresh from being crowned Spanish Super Cup winners after defeating eternal rivals Real Madrid 5-2, third-placed Barcelona also have a very clear aim: to keep the pressure on the Madrid clubs immediately above them. Sitting six points behind leaders Atlético Madrid ahead of the weekend, Barça can ill afford another slip-up after some disastrous league form which has seen them win just one of their last seven such games (D2, L4).
That sequence includes back-to-back defeats, while the last time they lost three La Liga matches in a row was back in April 2016! Perhaps we shouldn’t expect that record to be equalled here however, as Barcelona have kept six straight clean sheets against Getafe – their longest such ongoing run against any Spanish top-flight opponent.
Players to watch: After returning from a lengthy injury lay-off, Borja Mayoral scored in successive outings earlier this month for the first time since last January. Barça’s 17-year-old sensation Lamine Yamal has also netted in consecutive games recently, with his eight goals this campaign already surpassing his entire tally from last season (seven).
Hot stat: This term, Getafe have scored 38% of their goals in La Liga (5/13) from headers – the highest percentage of any team in the competition in 2024/25 going into the weekend.
