Chelsea’s Mauricio Pochettino became the latest Premier League manager to speak out against VAR, insisting it’s “damaged” the game after his side were controversially denied a late winner against Aston Villa. In spite of his fury, Pochettino will have been pleased that his side fought from two goals down at Villa Park, especially as it came in the wake of a 5-0 thumping against Arsenal.

The Blues now head back to Stamford Bridge, a venue where they’ve lost just one of their last ten Premier League matches (W7, D2), with Tottenham the next visitors for a fixture where chaos is never far away. Pochettino was in the visiting dugout for the ‘Battle of the Bridge’ back in 2016, while his current side ran out 4-1 winners in this season’s reverse fixture that saw two Tottenham defenders sent off.

Keeping their backline intact hasn’t helped Spurs much in recent weeks however, as they’ve lost back-to-back Premier League matches, conceding seven goals in the process. Boss Ange Postecoglou lamented his side’s “lack of focus” which saw them trail 3-0 to bitter rivals Arsenal by half-time, and though they staged a late fightback, a 3-2 defeat leaves their UEFA Champions League ambitions out of their hands.

Form on the road has become particularly concerning of late too, with Tottenham winning only one of their last seven away league matches (D3, L3). A trip across the capital to the Bridge therefore comes at a terrible time, as this is a venue Spurs have won at just once in 33 league visits since February 1990.

Key battle: Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher, strongly linked with a move to Tottenham in the summer, has directly contributed to ten goals in the Premier League this season (G4, A6) – only once before has he reached double figures for goal involvements. Midfield rival Pierre-Emile Højbjerg scored on his last trip to Stamford Bridge, yet he’s lost a joint-career high 12 times against the Blues over the years (W3, D2).

Hot stat: In a trend that continued against Arsenal, Tottenham have scored 43 of their 67 Premier League goals this season in the second half of matches (64.2%).
