The battle for a place in the UEFA Europa League (UEL) last 16 gets underway as a resurgent Celtic host fellow in-form side Stuttgart in the first leg of their knockout play-off. These teams have met twice before, sharing a home win apiece in the 2002/03 UEFA Cup as Celtic reached the quarter-finals with a 5-4 aggregate victory. Of Stuttgart’s last nine goals, eight were scored after half-time, including seven after the 83rd minute.

The Martin O’Neill honeymoon period is still going at Celtic, after a last-gasp 3-2 win over Kilmarnock on Sunday kept him unbeaten since taking the reins at the club for the third time (W8, D2). Two of those matches have been in the UEL (W1, D1), with a 4-2 triumph over Utrecht last month securing a knockout play-off place. Progression from here would leave fans dreaming of a repeat of 2002/03, when O’Neill was in charge for a run to the UEFA Cup final. It is concerning that the Hoops have not won any of their last three double-legged European ties, but belief can be drawn from a five-game winning sequence at home across all competitions.

Stuttgart have now won five of their last six matches (L1) following a 3-1 victory over Cologne at the weekend. Such form, which includes beating Swiss side Young Boys 3-2, means that they have reached this stage of a continental competition for the first time since 2012/13 – a feat achieved despite losing three of their four UEL away games ‘to nil’ this season (W1). Sebastian Hoeneß’s men have been strong on the road recently though across all competitions, winning five of their last seven such encounters (L2) and scoring at least twice in each victory, so their supporters can travel to Glasgow with some confidence.

During this season’s UEL league phase, only two teams had fewer shots than Celtic’s 75. Celtic were one of five clubs who went through the UEL league phase this term without keeping a clean sheet. There were more than 2.5 goals in five of Stuttgart’s last six matches.

Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel made 30 saves during this season’s UEL league phase – the seventh-most in the competition. No player has made more fouls than Stuttgart right-back Lorenz Assignon during this term’s UEL main draw (19) ahead of this round of fixtures.

Celtic’s Arne Engels is sidelined with a thigh injury, while centre-back Luca Jaquez has missed Stuttgart’s last few games through illness.
