A pair of struggling Premier League rivals clash on Sunday, as a Crystal Palace side in freefall travel to face fierce foes Brighton on the south coast. Brighton have won just two of their last 13 Premier League games against Palace (D7, L4), with both victories coming across the last three meetings they hosted (L1). Brighton have netted one or fewer goals in eight of their last ten league games.
With just one victory across their last 11 Premier League games (D6, L4), Brighton sit well off the European qualification pace as pressure continues to mount on manager Fabian Hürzeler. He’ll be desperate for his side to end their habit of drawing on home soil as quickly as possible, with four of the Seagulls’ last five at the Amex Stadium ending in stalemate (W1). Conceding a 97th-minute equaliser against Everton in their last outing here means that Brighton have now won just one of their last four Premier League matches when going ahead (D1, L2), with those eight dropped points representing their pre-round deficit to the top six.
Crystal Palace’s fortunes are even worse at present, both in terms of league position and because they’re enduring a nine-match winless run in the Premier League (D3, L6). Boss Oliver Glasner will hope the arrival of record-signing Jørgen Strand Larsen can help to arrest that slump as they’ve been particularly poor up front, netting just five goals across those nine games. Failing to beat Nottingham Forest (D 1-1) after playing the entire second half against ten men is indicative of the Eagles’ struggles, although that at least ended a five-match losing streak in competitive away games.
A pre-round league-high nine of Brighton’s 12 home Premier League matches have seen both sides score. Palace have failed to win any of the eight league games they conceded first in this term (D2, L6). Palace’s Premier League games have averaged a joint-league low 0.96 first-half goals.
Despite being without a goal in 18 appearances for Brighton, four of Yankuba Minteh’s last five have come in the first half of home matches as he looks to break his duck. Ismaïla Sarr had a hand in all of Palace’s goals in their 3-1 win in last season’s corresponding fixture (G2, A1), and four of his last five strikes have come between the 40th minute and half-time.
Diego Gómez is the latest name on Brighton’s injury list, while Palace are hoping Daichi Kamada is fit to return here.
