Braga’s 98th game in the UEFA Europa League (UEL) proper, the most of any side, sees them enter what should be a hotly-contested quarter-final contest when Real Betis cross the Spanish-Portuguese border. This is the teams’ first meeting in European competition, but will be Braga’s sixth against Spanish sides (W2, L3), while Real Betis remain unbeaten from four encounters with Portuguese outfits this century (W3, D1).
Braga enter the UEL quarter-finals for the fourth time thanks to a 4-2 aggregate win over Ferencváros, in which they scored all four of their goals in the second leg at home. That triumph means the Archbishops have now won all of their last seven two legged ties in European competition, and nine wins from their last ten European home matches should have them believing their quest to stretch that run will get off on solid footing. They did lose their last match at the Braga Municipal Stadium when they went down 2-1 against Porto, but a ten match unbeaten run in such matches prior (W8, D2) is more in keeping with what to expect from Braga.
Real Betis’ fifth successive European campaign has resulted in a maiden UEL quarter-final berth, but their history making campaign looks to be running out of steam as they appear to be falling out of form at an inopportune time. Manuel Pellegrini’s side have won just one of their last eight games (D4, L3), including a 0-0 draw with Espanyol at the weekend, but they can perhaps lean on the fact that sole success came in their last outing in this competition as they beat Panathinaikos 4-0 in the second leg of their last 16 tie. Real Betis have now progressed from each of their last six continental two legged ties thanks to that success, so even slumping to a fourth successive away defeat here may not be enough to write them off in this tie.
Braga have kept a competition-high seven UEL clean sheets this season. Braga’s last six home matches produced over 2.5 goals. Just two of Real Betis’ last 14 matches were scoreless at half-time. Just one of Real Betis’ five away UEL games this season saw both teams score.
Braga keeper Lukáš Horníček has kept all seven of their clean sheets in the UEL proper this term, putting him just one away from matching the single-season record in the competition’s history. Antony will be keen to ensure he doesn’t claim that record here, and he could strike early here given that eight of his last nine Real Betis goals came before half-time.
Adrian Leon Barišić will be missing for Braga, while Ángel Ortiz is Real Betis’ latest casualty.
