Both Borussia Dortmund and Mainz head into this Bundesliga Friday night clash in great form, but with very different objectives for the remainder of the season. Dortmund have lost only seven of the 39 historical H2Hs (W22, D10), with just two of those defeats coming at home. Those two wins for Mainz are the least they’ve recorded away against a Bundesliga team that they’ve played 19 times or more, but their record here across their last eight visits is very respectable, with Mainz scoring in each game (W2, D3, L3). Dortmund have scored the opening goal from a set piece a league-high nine times this season.

Dortmund benefited from a late goal to win 2-1 at Wolfsburg last weekend to extend their unbeaten Bundesliga run to 14 league games (W10, D4), in turn widening the gap to third place to six points. Coach Niko Kovac might be adamant that his side cannot challenge for the title, but they should be hopeful of picking up another three points here as they rank as the best home team in terms of points average, and are the only Bundesliga side yet to lose on home turf (W8, D2). Highlighting the task ahead for the visitors here, Dortmund have conceded a league-low eight home goals and registered a league-high six home clean sheets.

Mainz left the relegation zone for the first time since matchday five with a 2-0 win against Augsburg last weekend to make it four wins from their last five games this calendar year (L1), a run which has contributed to them collecting 15 of their 21 league points since early December when Urs Fischer took over (W4, D3, L1). After only one point from seven Bundesliga matches against top-half teams without Fischer, they have since avoided defeat in their last three such games (W1, D2), all of which came on their travels. A 2-1 success at Champions League chasers RB Leipzig was one of those victories and came on their last away trip, which should give them some belief they can upset the odds in this battle of two of the best sides this calendar year.

Dortmund have won the first half a league-high 15 times this season, 12 times by a 1-0 scoreline. Mainz have been awarded the second-most yellow cards (54) this Bundesliga season. Mainz have won a joint-league high eight penalties, converting seven of them, five of which came across their last three games, including the one miss.

Julian Brandt scored his fourth match opener this season during Dortmund’s last win, while he also assisted both goals in their 2-0 win in the reverse fixture. Phillip Tietz has registered three of his four goal involvements this season in the last five games (G1, A2), with Mainz winning all three games.

Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck is suspended here and Emre Can is still not available. Mainz don’t appear to have any new absentees.
